Iorram Presents

David Stackenäs (guitar) & Raymond MacDonald (saxophones)

One of Sweden’s most in demand and inquiring improvising guitarists makes a rare appearance in Scotland.
“Creating something different, not to mention memorable with the world's most popular instrument, the guitar, often seems as unlikely as winning the national lottery. Yet Swedish guitarist David Stackenäs has done so on this short, cunningly enigmatic disc.” Ken Waxman on solo-cd “the guitar”

+ Aileen Campbell (voice), Una MacGlone (double bass) & Emma Roche (flute)

New Releases October 2009

Peter Nicholson and Raymond MacDonald - Streetlevel Iorram OB30

From a last visit to the Streetlevel premises at 48 King Street comes a record that belies the old Apollo/Marsayas opposition of string and wind: both cello and saxophone are wheezing corpulent and apparently without skin. Hear them sing as John Cavanagh swathes their wounds in quarter inch tape. CD-R 100 hand made copies

Helhesten - Thickly Grown Iorram KY96

Tape rubbed evocations of something slender and burnished, Messiaenic aviaries in drains. Recorded in various miss-matched settings, the first six pieces of this record form a crudely but carefully butted assembly. Helhesten's urban pastoral is a dirty place. CD-R 100 hand made copies Review

Iorram's favourite record producer and broadcaster John Cavanagh has teamed up with director Maria Gil of Lisbon based theatre company Teatro Do Silencio in a new production of Pirate Radio, a broadcast for the stage. In this production devised from John's memories and experiences he opens his diary, asks questions and invites invisible guests to the show. Pirate Radio is a flashback, a journey, an attempt at mapping memories and of putting an audience face-to-face with the past and future. It takes place live on stage at The Arches in Glasgow, and is broadcast live online on Radio 6 International here: http://www.radiosix.com/index.html

2 New CDs Out Now

Iorram GN54
Aporias Trio - Tatsuya Nakatani - drums and percussion, Raymond MacDonald - sax, Neil Davidson - guitar: Entre Nous
Recorded in the midst of an intense tour of the UK in 2007. This disk breaks up the long arcs of sound which marked the trio's live performances from that period into discreet essays in sonic physicality. Shamanic percussion, deconstructed guitar and circular breathing. Artwork by Sarah Tripp. CD limited to 500 copies

Review by Richard Pinnell

Iorram ML83
George Lewis and the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra: Metamorphic Rock
40 minutes of free improvisation from George Lewis and GIO recorded in December 2007 mid way through preparatory work on Lewis's new piece, 'Artificial Life 2007' for the orchestra. One continuous take revealing the group in its subtlest and most raucous modes. Artwork by Sarah Tripp. CD 500 copies

Michael Francis Duch's playing retains the monster side of the bass while peeling back its articulation to the bare minimum. A combination of terminal moraine dirt and glacial scale. If Peter Hook had played in AMM...
